Complete fire prevention systems

According to UNI standards, a fire prevention system is the set of technical elements of a building system designed to prevent, eliminate, limit, or signal fires, from passive defense (fire doors) to active defense (flame suppression). Implicit in the definition is the multiplicity of possible types of this system: signaling systems and fire suppression systems. Fire detection, which allows for the subsequent extinguishing of flames, occurs through sensors capable of signaling the presence of smoke or heat sources. Fire extinguishing, on the other hand, occurs using fire hydrants, nozzles, rotating hose reels, and mobile extinguishers. More rarely, a pressurized, automatically operating water network, controlled by the fire detection system and equipped with sprinkler nozzles, may be installed. In areas where the use of liquids or foam would be harmful to the equipment, automatic halon gas extinguishing systems are commonly used; this is the case, for example, in data centers, FileNet archives, and inverter rooms.

Domestic fire prevention systems

A fire extinguishing system, in the case of residential buildings, is required when the building exceeds 24 meters in height. The fire suppression system consists of:
  • galvanized iron water supply network;
  • fire extinguishers in a containment box, with built-in hydrant and related equipment;
  • attack groups for fire brigade vehicles.
  • The water supply network supplies water to every part of the building to be protected, feeding the various fire-fighting systems (hydrants, water supply systems, foam systems, etc.).

  • Correct design must ensure:
  • independence from any other water network;
  • provision of shut-off valves that allow the network to be sectioned during work on it;
  • continuous pressurized supply to the network, obtainable through an elevated tank or through automatically operated pumps;
  • provision of a water tank with a capacity adequate for the size of the network;
  • presence of at least two water delivery pumps driven by motors with different power sources (electric motor, internal combustion engine);
  • ring-shaped network structure to allow the hydrants to be supplied from multiple sources and limit pressure drops.
